Curriculum Information by Marking Period

Benchmarks are assessed in the marking periods in which they occur.  If a performance occurs in a given marking period, those benchmarks may be assessed in the periods around it.


1st Marking Period

Identify Sounds of Various Instruments and Voices

Identify the sounds of a variety of instruments, including many orchestra, band, and electronic instruments, and instruments from various cultures, as well as children’s voices and male/female voices.

Notating Using Symbols

Use standard symbols to notate meter, rhythm, pitch and dynamics in simple patterns presented by the teacher.

2nd Marking Period

Identify and interpret level appropriate terms and symbols

Identify symbols and traditional terms referring to dynamics, tempo, and articulation and interpret them correctly when performing.

Explaining music using appropriate terminology

Use appropriate terminology in explaining musical instruments, voices and music performances.

Describe elements

Describe how elements of music are used in examples from various cultures of the world.

3rd Marking Period

Identify Period Music by Genre and Style

Identify by genre and style aural examples of music from various historical time periods and cultures.

Compare and Contrast Meanings of Common Terms

Observe and identify similarities and differences in the meanings of common terms used in the various arts.

Interdisciplinary Studies with Music

Observe and identify ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with those of music.

4th Marking Period

Create and Arrange Short Songs

Create and arrange short songs and instrumental pieces within specified guidelines.

Variety of Sound Sources in Composing, Arranging, Improvising

Use a variety of traditional and non-traditional sound sources and electronic media when composing, arranging, and improvising.
