Curriculum Information by Marking Period
Benchmarks are assessed in the marking periods in which they occur. If a performance occurs in a given marking period, those benchmarks may be assessed in the periods around it.
1st Marking Period
Sing Expressively
Sing expressively with appropriate dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation.
Pitch Reading
Use a system to read simple pitch notation in the treble clef in major keys.
Students will create pentatonic scales on pitched percussion instruments.
Identify Instruments Aurally
Identify non-western instruments when presented aurally.
2nd Marking Period
Read notes in 3 and 2
Read whole, half, quarter, dotted half, and eighth notes and rests in duple and triple meter.
Interpret tempo terms
Interpret terms for tempo and articulation while performing.
Use time signatures
Use appropriate time signatures (2/4, ¾, 4/4) when notating patterns presented by the teacher.
3rd Marking Period
Sing and Play a Variety
Sing from memory and play a varied repertoire of music representing genres and styles from diverse cultures.
Explain Personal Preference
Explain, using appropriate terminology, personal preferences for specific musical works and styles.
Identify Styles and Genres
Identify aural examples of various styles and genres of American music.
Identify Uses of Music
Identify various uses of music in daily experiences and describe characteristics that make certain music suitable for each use.
4th Marking Period
Improvise
Improvise simple rhythmic variations and simple melodic embellishments of familiar melodies.
Students will create rhythmic and melodic ostinatos using solfege and pitched/non-pitched percussions.
Arrange Original Song
Arrange original songs for a variety of classroom instruments and/or voices.
Arrange Song with Electronic Media
Use a variety of sound sources and electronic media when arranging original songs.
Define Grade Level Terminology
Define staccato, legato, adagio, andante, allegro
