Curriculum Information by Marking Period

Benchmarks are assessed in the marking periods in which they occur.  If a performance occurs in a given marking period, those benchmarks may be assessed in the periods around it.

1st Marking Period

Use Correct Voice

Use head and chest voice appropriately, good posture, and proper diction.

Sing/Play from Memory

Sing from memory and play a small repertoire of music.

Sing/Play in Group

Sing and play in groups, blending timbre, matching dynamic levels and responding to cues from the conductor.

Identify Families

Identify specific instruments in string, brass, woodwind, and percussion families when presented aurally.

2nd Marking Period

Use terms for preference

Use basic terminology (melody, harmony, rhythm, expressive qualities) to express personal preferences for musical works or styles.

Perform on instruments

Perform easy rhythmic, melodic, and chordal patterns accurately and independently on rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic instruments.

Identify examples of cultures

Identify aurally examples of music from Africa, the Orient, and the western classical tradition.

Roles of Musicians

Identify and describe roles of musicians in various settings and cultures.

3rd Marking Period

Show How Words Become Phrases

Demonstrate an understanding of how words, dynamics, and tempo relate to phrasing and interpretation.

Ostinato and Partner Songs

Sing ostinatos, partner songs, and rounds.

Read Note Values

Read whole, half, quarter, eighth notes and rests.

Use of Electronic Media

Analyze personal family and community use of electronic media.

4th Marking Period

Create a Song

Create an original song

Use Media to Create an Idea

Use electronic media to create, notate and record short original musical idea.

Perform Instrument Parts

Perform independent instrumental parts while other students sing or play contrasting parts.

Use Notation/Marks

Use rhythmic notation and dynamic markings to represent patterns presented by the teacher.

Improvise Answers

Improvise “answers” in the same style to given rhythmic and melodic phrases.

Improvise Embellishments

Improvise various ways to embellish a pitch.
